National volunteer recruitment for prison ministry

2024 Grant: $40,000
Purpose: National volunteer recruitment for prison ministry
Beneficiaries: Adults
Total Grants to date:    $232,000
Area: Furthering Faith and Religious Endeavours in Australia

Continuing the momentum built from the 2023 funding received to respond to specific requests from prisons for additional volunteers to serve in these facilities.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation; we are in essence a volunteer organisation with a small staff whose purpose is to facilitate the work of volunteers. Volunteers are responsible for running in-prison programs - which help inmates develop character and turn their lives around - and they're the ones inmates turn to for support and friendship during challenging times.

We currently have volunteers in more than 60 prisons across Australia. A number of these prisons - across multiple states - are requesting more PFA volunteers to meet with inmates and/or run new or additional programs. We also have opportunities to work in prisons where we've never been before, or are just starting to work - including in Alice Springs (NT) and the Pilbara region (WA).Responding to these opportunities will allow us to reach a new cohort of prisoners who've never received such support.

The grant would support (current) staff to travel to speak in churches in regional and metropolitan areas to recruit more volunteers for in-prison ministry. Funding would also help to get our volunteer training course online, using our existing Learning Management System. This will reduce the cost and time of training volunteers - especially those in remote locations.
